When temperatures fall well below freezing, oil thickens, startup lubrication matters more, and the wrong maintenance choice can add wear where you cannot see it. The synthetic vs conventional oil decision is not about buying the most expensive bottle on the shelf. It is about using the oil your engine needs, at a cost and service interval that make sense for how you drive.
For many drivers, the answer is already in the owner’s manual. Modern engines are built with specific oil grades and performance standards in mind. Following those requirements protects your engine, supports fuel efficiency, and helps prevent avoidable repair bills. The practical question is whether synthetic, conventional, or synthetic-blend oil best meets those requirements for your vehicle.
Synthetic vs Conventional Oil: The Real Difference
Conventional motor oil is refined from crude oil. It provides dependable lubrication when it meets the vehicle manufacturer’s required viscosity and specification. For older vehicles with straightforward engine designs and regular driving habits, conventional oil can still be a suitable and cost-conscious option.
Full synthetic oil is more highly refined and engineered for consistent performance. Its molecules are more uniform, helping the oil flow more easily in cold weather and resist breaking down under heat, heavy loads, stop-and-go traffic, or long service intervals. It also generally manages sludge and deposits more effectively in engines prone to them.
A synthetic blend sits between the two. It combines conventional base oil with a portion of synthetic oil, offering better cold-weather and high-temperature performance than conventional oil at a lower price than full synthetic. It can be a sensible choice where the manufacturer permits it, particularly for drivers who want added protection without moving to a full-synthetic oil change.
The key point is simple: oil type is only one part of the decision. The correct viscosity, such as 0W-20, 5W-30, or 5W-20, and the required approval or specification are just as important. An oil that is synthetic but does not meet your manufacturer’s requirements is not automatically the right oil.
When Full Synthetic Oil Is Worth the Cost
Full synthetic oil is often required for newer vehicles, especially those with turbocharged engines, direct injection, hybrid systems, or tightly engineered internal components. These engines can create more heat, place greater demands on the oil, or rely on precise oil flow at startup. Using the specified synthetic oil is a maintenance requirement, not an optional upgrade.
It is also a strong choice for Canadian drivers who face frequent short trips. On a short commute, the engine may not reach full operating temperature long enough to evaporate moisture and fuel vapour from the oil. Over time, those contaminants can reduce oil quality. For many vehicle owners, the higher upfront cost is offset by better performance and, where the manufacturer allows it, longer change intervals. That does not mean every synthetic oil change should be delayed to the maximum possible distance. Oil age, driving conditions, filter quality, and the vehicle’s oil-life monitoring system all matter.
Cold starts and winter performance
The first seconds after starting an engine are especially important because the oil must circulate quickly to protect moving parts. Synthetic oil generally flows better at very low temperatures than conventional oil of a comparable grade. That is a meaningful benefit during Canadian winters, particularly if your vehicle is parked outdoors.
The number before the “W” in an oil grade refers to cold-temperature flow characteristics. A 0W oil typically flows more readily in cold conditions than a 5W oil, but you should never switch grades simply because winter arrives. Use the grade approved by the manufacturer. When Conventional Oil Can Still Make Sense

It can also be a practical option for owners focused on keeping routine maintenance costs down. The savings are real, especially for households or small fleets maintaining several vehicles. However, lower initial cost should not lead to longer-than-recommended intervals or skipped oil changes. Clean, correctly specified conventional oil changed on schedule is far better than premium synthetic oil left in service too long.
There are limits. If a vehicle was designed for full synthetic oil, uses a turbocharger, or has a stated synthetic-only requirement, switching to conventional oil to save money is not a good trade-off. It can affect engine protection, performance, and potentially warranty compliance.
Does synthetic oil cause leaks in older engines?
This concern comes up often, but synthetic oil does not normally create a leak in a healthy engine. What can happen is that an existing hardened seal or gasket leak becomes more noticeable after an oil change. Modern synthetic oils are compatible with engine seals, and many include conditioners intended to support seal health.
If an older vehicle is already losing oil, the right response is to identify the source. A mechanic can check for external leaks, oil consumption, worn seals, or other engine concerns before recommending an oil type or viscosity. Moving to a thicker oil without proper diagnosis may hide a symptom while leaving the actual issue unresolved.
How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Vehicle
Start with the owner’s manual or the information on the oil cap. Look for the required viscosity and any industry or manufacturer approvals. Many vehicles require standards such as API, ILSAC, dexos, or a manufacturer-specific approval. These specifications confirm that the oil has been tested for the protection your engine needs.
Next, be honest about your driving. A vehicle that makes two short trips each day has different oil demands than one that travels 100 kilometres of open highway daily. Towing, rideshare work, commercial use, heavy loads, and repeated winter idling all count as more severe service. Under severe service, the manufacturer may recommend shorter oil-change intervals even when using full synthetic oil.
Your vehicle’s age and condition also matter. High-mileage oils may be useful for some older engines because they contain additives designed for ageing seals and deposit control. They are not a repair for mechanical wear, but they can be appropriate maintenance when matched to the vehicle’s needs.
Finally, consider the total service, not just the oil. A quality oil filter, proper installation, accurate fluid level, and a reset of the maintenance reminder all contribute to a reliable oil change. Checking for leaks, unusual oil consumption, or warning lights at the same time can prevent a minor concern from becoming an expensive engine repair.
Avoid These Common Oil Change Mistakes
Do not assume “synthetic” means one oil fits every vehicle. Do not rely on a generic mileage rule from years ago, either. Many modern vehicles use an oil-life monitoring system that considers engine operating conditions, while others have strict time-and-distance schedules.
Avoid topping up with an unknown oil whenever possible. In an emergency, adding compatible oil is better than running the engine low, but confirm the grade and specification at the next service. Running low on oil can cause serious damage far faster than using a different approved brand.
It is also wise to check the oil level periodically between services, especially on higher-mileage vehicles or engines known to use oil. Park on level ground, allow the engine to sit briefly after shutting it off, and follow the dipstick procedure in your manual. An oil warning light should never be ignored - pull over safely and have the vehicle assessed promptly.
