Left alone, it can turn into an overheating engine, an unexpected breakdown, or expensive internal damage. Your engine depends on coolant to carry heat away and maintain a safe operating temperature. In Canada, that job is especially demanding. Coolant must protect the engine during summer heat, freezing winter temperatures, stop-and-go traffic, and long highway drives. Warning Signs of a Coolant Leak
A puddle under the front of your vehicle
A visible puddle is one of the clearest signs. Coolant is often green, orange, pink, red, blue, or yellow, depending on the product and vehicle manufacturer. It may feel slippery and have a sweet odour. You will commonly see it beneath the radiator area, near the front of the engine, or under a hose connection.
Do not rely on colour alone. Road grime can make coolant look brown or nearly clear, and other vehicle fluids can drip in the same area. Engine oil is usually darker and slicker, while water from air conditioning is clear and odourless. If you are unsure which fluid is on the ground, arrange a professional inspection rather than guessing.
The coolant level keeps dropping
Your coolant reservoir has low and full markings that make quick checks easier when the engine is cold. If you need to top it up repeatedly, coolant is escaping somewhere, even if you cannot see a puddle.
Some leaks only appear once the engine is hot and the cooling system becomes pressurized. Coolant may seep from a hose, radiator seam, water pump, or gasket while driving, then evaporate before it reaches the ground. White steam from under the hood
Steam is different from the normal vapour you may see from an exhaust pipe on a cold Canadian morning. Steam from under the hood usually means coolant has reached a hot engine surface or the cooling system is boiling over.

Weak heat from the vents

Visible residue around hoses, the radiator, or water pump
Coolant often leaves behind crusty white, green, pink, or orange residue once it dries. Check for staining around hose clamps, the radiator, the coolant reservoir, and the water pump area. Cracked rubber hoses, swollen sections, and loose clamps can all allow coolant to escape.
Radiators can also corrode over time, especially around seams and fittings. A water pump may leak through a small drain opening when its internal seal begins to fail. These faults can start slowly, so residue may be the only clue before coolant loss becomes obvious.
White exhaust smoke that continues after warm-up
A small amount of white vapour from the tailpipe on a cold day is often normal condensation. Thick white smoke that continues after the engine is fully warm, particularly with a sweet smell, can indicate coolant entering the combustion chamber.
This may be linked to a failed head gasket, cracked cylinder head, or another internal engine problem. You may also notice rough running, misfires, unexplained coolant loss, or oil that looks milky. This is not a repair to delay. Continuing to drive can make the engine damage significantly worse.
Dashboard warnings or repeated engine concerns

What Causes Coolant Leaks?

It may also involve a cracked hose, damaged radiator, leaking water pump, failed thermostat housing, worn reservoir, or gasket failure. Use only the coolant type specified for your vehicle if a top-up is necessary. Mixing incompatible coolant products can reduce corrosion protection and create further service issues.
Do not use stop-leak products as a permanent fix. They can occasionally help in a limited emergency, but they may also clog small cooling passages, the heater core, or radiator. A proper repair addresses the failed component and restores the cooling system to reliable condition.
